L’agriculture au Burkina Faso est la principale source de revenus et d’emplois. Elle fournit plus de 30% du PIB, mai reste avant tout, une agriculture de subsistance. Les autorités ont décidé dans le cadre de la lutte contre la pauvreté de mettre un accent particulier sur le développement de l’agriculture en élaborant des politiques et des stratégies agricoles pour l’horizon 2010. Au regard des contraintes principales de l’agriculture qui se résument à la baisse de la fertilité des sols et à un environnement socio-économique peu favorable à l’émergence d’une agriculture et d’un élevage productifs et durables, le Burkina Faso a mis au point une stratégie et un plan d’action de gestion intégrée de la fertilité des sols.
Le plan d’action en particulier doit s’attaquer à la fois au problème de la fertilité des sols et à celui du marché des intrants et des produits agricoles. La stratégie et le plan d’action ayant été conçus selon l’esprit de l’Initiative pour la Fertilité des Sols (IFS) et sur la base d’une démarche participative, leur mise en œuvre est largement facilitée. Cependant, force est de reconnaître que depuis son achèvement en 1999, le plan d’action souffre d’un manque de financement. Un appui du CILSS sera d’une grande utilité pour mobiliser une coalition internationale en faveur du financement de ce plan d’action.
